Who was Alexander von Humboldt? (1769-1859)

This scientist is world famous in Germany. According to Darwin, he was the most important "scientific traveler" of all time. His research largely took place in Central and South America. Humboldt is seen in the 21st century as a forerunner in the study of ecology. He emphasized the mutual influence of species. For example, during his trip to America he criticized the extensive deforestation and predicted its catastrophic consequences for the climate. (Wikipedia map)
