Milky Way
First about our galaxy. It spans 100,000 light-years and contains about 3 billion stars. For the sake of understanding: 1 billion is 1000 million. And all those stars probably have planets again. But how can you make contact with another intelligence at, say, 5000 light years away? Light is an electro-magnetic wave comparable to, for example, a radio wave, only with a different frequency. They all have the same speed of 300,000 km per second.
The inventor of the radio was Marconi in 1895. That's only 125 years ago, which is nothing in astronomical terms. So we are visible to other intelligences 125 light years away, if they use radio waves.
So we have to come up with something else. But what?!
Damn I can do that anyway.
If I don't remember for a while I'm going to swim laps in my pool here, 25 meters. Even as you get older it is very important to stay fit. If I'm still there if it doesn't work out, I'm going to drink whiskey. It took me a lot of lap swimming and whiskey before I had the beginning of a plan.
You have no idea in the evening and the next morning I suddenly knew. The brain keeps spinning during sleep. Very strange sensation.
